If you haven’t heard of Google notebook, prepare to be amazed. I’ve known it existed for some time, but only yesterday did someone show me how it actually works, and it’s the perfect (free) tool for journalists, especially when you combine it with the Firefox plugin or the generic bookmarklet “note this” button.
Google Notebook lets you save clippings from any page on the web, complete with notes and a link back to the original source, making it a very slick automated way to track notes while working on a story. It’s much easier to show you than to tell you how this all works, so I’ve recorded a super low production-value video, which you can watch right here:

Google is sunsetting the Notebook.
Google announced last month that they are shutting down Notebook. Sorry.
I’m a fan of Evernote. It’s free and it offers native versions for web, desktop, and multiple flavors of mobile devices. Oh, and it performs OCR on images you send to your account. Yowza. They now offer an importer for Notebook users.
I’m with Seth, Evernote rocks. Zoho notebook is nice too.
I had the exact same reaction, but when Google announced the end of Notebook, i went out and try Evernote: far more powerful, though sometimes i just wanted it to be simple(r).
But to tell you the truth, the Google Docs Bar Firefox plugin can mimmick a notebook with a faster access to Google docs. Still, Evernote is really good, and it allows you to work offline (yeah right, like if anyone does work offline these days!).
