Events happening this week

by Jason Preston on January 13, 2009

I already sent this list of events to the people who are on the Eat Sleep Publish e-mail list, so I apologize if this is a repeat for you; I do think that these are important for anyone interested in the future of journalism and publishing, so I thought a public reminder was also warranted.

In the wake of last week’s P-I announcements, several people have been working over the weekend to put together a couple of impromptu get-togethers that are happening Thursday and Friday. In addition, Mónica’s weekly meetup is likely to house a journalism-centric conversation this Wednesday.

Here are the deets on what’s happening this week:

WEDNESDAY 1-14
—————–
5:30-7pm:

The usual Big Blog meetup hosted by Mónica Guzmán (@moniguzman on twitter, The Big Blog at the Seattle P-I) will happen as usual, this week in South Seattle, although I understand the group will be especially receptive to discussion about the P-I closure.

Show up, bring your opinions, and be prepared to talk about the changes that are likely to happen in a one-newspaper town, where even that one remaining newspaper is on the verge of extinction.

No RSVP is required for the weekly meetups, but you can find the location in South Seattle and other information as it is announced in the sidebar on The Big Blog.

THURSDAY 1-15
—————–
6:30-9pm:

“Save the News?”

Seattle is on the verge of losing one of its two daily papers. What does that mean for the city? For news readers? For local media and bloggers?

Dylan Wilbanks of Seattle Metblogs had an idea that there should be an event in a month or so that gives people a space to talk about this, and this Thursday he’s dedicating the normal Seattle Metblogs meetup to exploring and planning that later event.

You can RSVP on Facebook if you want, but I understand it’s not required.

FRIDAY 1-16
—————–
6-9pm:

The Western Washing Society of Professional Journalists, along with a little help from me @ Eat Sleep Publish, is putting on a Special Edition SPJ Press Club at Whym Diner in Belltwon (1st and Denny – google it, should be no problem), where we’ll talk about “what’s happening, why it’s happening, and what we can do as a journalism community to deal with it.”

This is more for the professional journalist (as the host organization’s name would imply), and anyone who wants to come should RSVP by e-mail or phone to Dana Blozis at spj@virtuallyyourz.com or 360-920-1737.
