A couple of publishers are starting to outsource their journalism. This is an interesting concept: why have an American journalist pulling your news together when you could have an English-speaking Indian do the work for less than half the cost?
If you want to be the lowest common denominator, this actually works just fine.
Two news ecosystems are emerging: one is the commodity news ecosystem, which pays either nothing or practically nothing for writing, and makes money by offering as much low-quality content as possible. The other is a niche news ecosystem, based on high-quality content worth paying for.
To the niche reader, it matters who wrote the local news article. Trust comes from local authority, from shared experience, and immediacy. Those are things you can’t fake with online video feeds.
There’s a reason that all the successful local news blogs are written by people who live and work in the area that they cover.
