More evidence that real identities make for good online conversations

by Jason Preston on August 25, 2008

Several weeks ago I wrote a post about using real identity as a way to fight idiotic, hateful, or trolling commenters.

Seth Godin’s experience with “a closed, non-anonymous site,” which I assume is this one, shows that my theory holds water, grows trees, and sprouts fruit (not to mix any metaphors):

On a closed, non-anonymous site I get to use, I’m noticing that the quality of comments continues to increase. I don’t think people are dumb. I think ease of use combined with anonymity and vanity just makes them seem that way.

That quote is from Seth’s post, Monkeys with Megaphones.

That’s true I think it does make for more engaging online discussion since there’s the illusion of a face to an actual name.
