No News is Bad News: Seattle As a No Newspaper Town?

by Jason Preston on February 5, 2009

No New is Bad News: Seattle As a No Newspaper Town? will happen from 7-9pm on Thursday, February 26th, at the Bertha Landes room in Seattle City Hall. RSVP here.

In the category of “things you may not know about,” which for me is clearly evernote (aside: note that it is freemium – more evidence that people will actually pay for things online), as commenters on my last post pointed out, I have to introduce you to No News is Bad News.

I’ve been helping out with No News is Bad News since the concept first gelled a few weeks ago to have an event designed to raise awareness about the state of journalism in the Seattle community. Since that concept was first floated by Dylan Wilbanks and Monica Guzman, several awesome people have put hours and hours into planning the event.

Nick Licata has “sponsored” the event which means free space in City Hall. We have Jay Rosen planning to attend the panel via some mythical “internet video” technology. (Whatever, like the internet even exists).

The room seats 200. The event is free. Let’s fill it up.

ps. Look for an announcement about The Pitch tomorrow.

Is there a sign-up form (like Eventbrite) or something, or just show up?

The state of journalism in Seattle — and journalism around the country, really — isn’t just about what’s going away. It’s also about what’s coming up. The key question is, What’s dying that can’t immediately be replaced by what’s rising? What do local newspapers both as products and organizations do that new media, as promising as they are, can’t do right now in the same market? And how do we bridge those gaps?
