The 1980′s called: They want the future of newspapers back

by Jason Preston on February 2, 2009

Have you seen this video? It showed up last week on TechCrunch, and it’s a TV spot on the digital future of newspapers.

Have a look:

I don’t even know where to start. What kinds of questions does this bring to mind? What are your thoughts?

Not just the “we’re not in to make money” comment, but it’s the final seconds of the video clip that I love — when the news anchor notes that the new “telepaper” will basically cost subscribers $10 and is (wait for it): “not much competition for the 20 cent street edition.” How times (and pricing models) have changed.

@DoreenatDMS I love that final line, it’s so deliciously ironic. The fact is that the economics have changed dramatically (maybe reversed?), as have the abilities of the standard “home computer.”

I especially liked the identifier, “Owns home computer.” Hard for me to imagine what it was like when that was enough to inspire an interview!

I just can’t believe what a pipe dream online news seemed then, and what an in-your-face reality it is now. Nobody then could have imagined just how transformative this medium would prove to be.
