So it continues. Newspapers are starting to realize that they are being had by the AP, because they are paying for the right to “reprint” something that is widely available online.
Editor and Publisher reports:
Star Tribune Managing Editor Rene Sanchez told the Web site that “we have the utmost respect for AP; this is not a hostile gesture by any means … It’s the beginning of an assessment of our business model, not the end.”
The Star Tribune is wise to turn a critical eye towards the AP when they’re re-hashing the business model.
The AP’s most basic service—efficiently distributing national news to local outlets—has been replaced by a far more effective system: the internet.
The AP might only have two years to flip the distribution model.
