The New Yorker – Digital Edition

by Jason Preston on October 13, 2008

I was reading the political issue of the New Yorker last night when I ran across one of their trademark sideline advertisements promoting the digital edition of the magazine.

Here’s what they have to say about it:

Get The New Yorker first, with the new digital edition. Sign up today and receive your weekly copy of the magazine in a convenient, Web-based format. A free four-issue trial of The New Yorker digital edition is available for a limited time only.

I’ll be waiting for the first issue in my inbox (they say it will be coming out later this year), and I’ll give my thoughts on it when I see it. I am interested to see how the online format works with my magazine reading habits.

There’s more info about the reader they’re using for the digital edition in this post.

You can interact with the reader software here:

I found your post using Google. The link in the New Yorker itself did not work but came up with an error message (from the New Yorker) — Probably because the printed link in the magazine uses “L” within the word digital. Geesh! Your link is the same, with a small “l” and that worked just fine. Seems the New Yorker wants to make everything difficult. (I commented on your post about the reader technology — which is one of the worst things about the “complete New Yorker” itself!)

WizardBoy, I doubt TNY intentionally wants to make anything difficult. Considering the constraints of making 80+ years of a magazine available digitally, how would you improve the reader technology?
