The Seattle P-I reminds us that this is not academic

by Jason Preston on January 12, 2009

Since I’m a Seattleite, and one who personally knows several people who work for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, I feel both obligated and reluctant to post about Friday’s announcements regarding the paper.

The news that the Seattle P-I may be sold or shut down is shockingly sudden, and surprising to almost everyone I’ve talked to. It is a startling and important reminder that the things we talk about here on this blog, when we gather for The Pitch, or elsewhere on the internet, are not merely academic subjects.

This is part of a larger discussion that touches both the fabric of our society and thousands upon thousands of lives across the entire country.

It is intimately related to our current world-wide financial crisis, and the corresponding recession. The reality is that very large and powerful institutions are facing hurdles that they do not yet know how to overcome.

It is easy to treat these issues flippantly and I know I am guilty of doing that on occasion. We would all do well to take them seriously.

My thoughts are with everyone at the P-I, and I hope for the best of all possible outcomes.
