The shortcut to a print product

by Jason Preston on January 14, 2009

I know that some hotels (I don’t actually know which ones, except that people I know have had this experience) will take it upon themselves to print out whole sections of the newspaper for their guests in the morning instead of providing the industry-standard copy of USA Today.

This gives me an idea.

Why not offer as a free download a little application that sits in the background on a reader’s computer, and automatically takes a selection of news (based, of course, on the reader’s stated preferences) from the newspaper site’s database around 6 or 7am (or, of course, any time set by the reader) and automatically sends it to their printer?

This way, a reader can satisfy their traditional morning routine—wake up, grumble, hit snooze, wake up, grab coffee, grab paper—without the newspaper having to bear the cost of either printing it or delivering it to their home.

I guess that’s a good middle ground, but I still think we should be weaning ourselves off paper.

That’s actually part of the business plan with JTM’s Next Newsroom. You should look at it.
